Epoxy is how CNC work levels up from 'nice sign' to 'how much is that?': pour a colored fill into a carved pocket, plane it flush, finish, and the piece looks like a gallery product. The chemistry is forgiving if you respect three numbers — pour depth, working time, and cure temperature — and unforgiving if you don't.

The CNC inlay workflow that works first time

  1. Carve the V-carve or pocket 2–4 mm deep. Deeper wastes epoxy; shallower planes through the fill at flush-up.
  2. Seal the pocket with a thin coat of the same epoxy or shellac and let it tack. Raw wood outgasses air into curing epoxy — this seal coat is where most bubble problems are actually solved.
  3. Mix by the ratio on your bottle (1:1 and 2:1 products behave nothing alike), slowly, scraping the sides, for a full 3 minutes. Under-mixed corners cure sticky forever.
  4. Tint, then overfill each cavity slightly with a squeeze bottle or syringe. Pass a torch or heat gun over the surface once, briefly, to pop surface bubbles.
  5. Cure fully (don't trust the tack test — go by hours on the label at your room temp), then plane flush with a surfacing bit, sand through the grits, and finish. Epoxy sands like hard plastic: keep it wet or slow to avoid heat gumming.

The failures, diagnosed in advance

Sticky spots a week later: mis-measured or under-mixed — there is no fix but scraping out and re-pouring; mix longer than feels necessary. Bubble champagne: unsealed wood outgassing (see step 2) or epoxy worked too cold — 72–78 °F is the happy zone, and warming bottles in warm water thins the mix beautifully. The leak: thin casting epoxy escapes through any unsealed knot, crack, or mold seam, typically onto the bench overnight; hot glue, Tyvek tape, and a genuinely level surface are the defense. Yellowing: cheap resin plus UV — for anything sun-exposed, pay for UV-stabilized product.

And the exotherm rule that prevents the dramatic failure: mass makes heat, heat makes speed, speed makes more heat. Big volume of fast epoxy = smoking, cracked, amber mess. Deep needs slow. Always.

'Food safe' on epoxy labels means the fully cured resin of specific FDA-compliant formulas is acceptable for incidental food contact — think charcuterie board surfaces, not cutting surfaces or hot pans. Cured epoxy scratches; knife work belongs on bare wood.

Why epoxy earns its bench space

Market math: a $12 walnut offcut plus $3 of epoxy and mica becomes a $45–80 inlay piece, and river-style boards headline the top table at any craft fair. It's also the great rescuer — cracks, knots, and voids that would scrap a board become 'features' with a tinted fill, which changes what lumber you can afford to buy. Why did my epoxy get hot, smoke, or crack in the mold?

Exotherm runaway: too much volume of too-fast epoxy in one pour. The reaction makes heat, heat accelerates the reaction, and past a threshold it races — warping molds, cracking the casting, occasionally smoking. Match product to depth: coating epoxy in millimeter layers, deep-pour for anything thick.

How do I get bubble-free epoxy without a vacuum chamber?

Five habits beat hardware at hobby scale: seal porous wood first, warm the bottles (not the mixed cup) to thin it, mix slowly, pour in a thin stream from height, and torch the surface once. Pressure pots and vacuum matter for clear deep castings; inlays and rivers don't need them.

How long before I can CNC or sand an epoxy fill?

Full cure, not touch-dry: typically 24–72 hours for tabletop and up to a week for deep-pour, longer in a cold shop. Machining soft epoxy gums bits and smears; the fingernail test (no dent under firm pressure) is the go signal. Cold garages in winter can double every number.

Can I color epoxy with paint or food coloring instead of mica?

Alcohol inks and epoxy-specific liquid tints work; acrylic paint works in small doses (a few percent by volume — more disturbs the cure); water-based anything, including food coloring, fights the chemistry and can leave it soft. Mica stays the default because it's cheap, stable, and gorgeous.

What's the difference between epoxy, polyester, and UV resin?

Epoxy: forgiving, low-odor, the maker default. Polyester resin: cheaper, faster, dramatically smellier, more brittle — auto-body and fiberglass territory. UV resin: cures in seconds under light but only in thin, small applications — jewelry and print repairs, not boards. For CNC inlays and rivers, epoxy is the only sensible answer.
