Acrylic vs Wood for Laser Projects

Wood projects forgive; acrylic projects gleam. The real decision is upstream of aesthetics: acrylic effectively requires a CO2 laser, while wood works on anything — and cast-versus-extruded is the acrylic detail that separates clean results from disappointment.

Machine reality first
Clear acrylic does not cut on diode lasers — it transmits the 450 nm beam (why). If you own a diode, your acrylic options are limited to dark opaque sheets on strong machines, with fumes that demand excellent ventilation. On CO2 machines, acrylic becomes the signature material: fast cuts, flame-polished edges, effortless engraving.
Wood is machine-agnostic. Basswood and 3 mm ply run on a $400 diode; thick hardwood runs on CO2. That asymmetry decides many shops: diode owners are wood shops, CO2 owners get to choose.

Cast vs extruded: the acrylic trap
Cast acrylic engraves to a bright frosted white and cuts clean — it's what every nice acrylic product uses. Extruded acrylic is cheaper, cuts fine, but engraves to a barely-visible clear-gray and melts gummier. Listings rarely brag about being extruded; if the price looks great and the word 'cast' is absent, it's extruded. For engraving work, only buy sheets explicitly sold as cast.
Which sells where
Market patterns are consistent: wood dominates personalized home goods (signs, ornaments, photo gifts — warm reads as 'handmade'), acrylic dominates wearables and celebration goods (earrings, cake toppers, edge-lit LED pieces — gloss reads as 'product'). Mixed-media — engraved acrylic over walnut — outsells both at premium prices and just needs registration pins.
If your machine can't do the acrylic half, that's outsourceable: design it, and have a shop like OCreate cut the acrylic parts while your diode does the wood.

Can I laser acrylic with the protective film on?
Cut with paper masking on (it prevents flashback marks); peel film/masking before engraving large areas, or the melt welds it on. Plastic film specifically should come off — paper masking goes on in its place.
Why are my acrylic edges melty instead of polished?
Underpowered or too slow: melt needs to vaporize, not ooze. Fewer passes at proper power beat many gentle ones, extruded sheet gums more than cast, and excessive air assist can actually mar CO2 acrylic edges — moderate the air, let the exhaust work.
What thickness should beginners buy?
3 mm in both materials. It's the sweet spot for jewelry, ornaments, signage layers, and boxes; cuts in one or two passes on appropriate machines; and every design library assumes it.
